This morning I woke up early, 6 o’clock because I wanted to walk to Jardin Marron and even higher to see what really happened there with the coco de mer trees, and what impact the land slide had on the nature in this area. When I left at 7 the thermometer pointed already 28°C. Jules who had to feed the tortoises first should come later, he is faster then me anyway.
Not to miss something I took 3 cameras and a film camera with and also 2 and a half liter of water. My first stop was at the split to Grande Barbe, and my second at the small pool, here I waited for Jules. When we were nearly at Jardin Marron, Jules who walked behind me said “stop, someone is talking in your rucksack”. I forgot to lock my mobile telephone, and called my wife’s mobile by accident, probably by hitting a rock or a tree. A bit embarrassing as it was only 5:30 in Belgium. When we reached the coco de mers we found a nut we hided there in June last year that germinated, and its first leave just started growing. Unfortunately we also saw 2 coco de mers badly damaged by fallen albizia trees. The upper part , let ‘s say the area after the tree trunk were I always take a rest when I am there with people, Silvia will certainly remember this place, this upper part is filled up with sand, stones and mud and hard to recognize. On certain parts you stand about a meter and a half higher then before. But the worst still had to come. When I arrived at the start of the climb to the ridge I could not believe my eyes. A stream of mud, sand, stones and rocks (from several tons) with a diameter from 3 to 5 meters had come down from about 30 meters under ridge and stopped at Jardin Marron. Over a length of 150 meters and 30 to 40 meters wide all plants and trees were gone. Albizias 30 to 40 meters high and 1,5 meters thick were blown away. Unfortunately also 3 coco de mer trees, 1male and 2 female trees were pushed down and partly covered by sand and mud. Silvia and Ralph if we would have been here 2 months later we should have never survived. Even now it was dangerous to walk on it, because these stones and sand are still slipping down. From the top of the slide you could see the harbour. I will put some pictures on me website, but they don’t show the real damage seen the slide makes a turn and splits. On the landslide I found a Seychelles endemic snake Lycognatophis seychellensis. On the way back I saw a female juvenile chameleon and 2 Ailuronyx. At 2:30 I was back home and very very tired.
During the rest of the afternoon I watched my pictures and film. I also received a message from the island manager that the boat on Thursday will not arrive at 10 in the morning but at 2 in the afternoon.
Gute nacht,
Guy

Hello,
New problems!!!!
The boat from Tuesday, which should come to morrow morning, later moved to the afternoon is now completely cancelled. I do not now how I have to reach Mahe, seen I have my flight to Europe Friday morning. I think the only solution will be to charter a helicopter but this will cost me nearly 500 €. BIG problems

Guy

Hi Guy,

i love the entries in your diary. Hope that your trip will have a (low priced) happy end.
Maybe you find a transfer with some visitor´s of Silhouette (today or tomorrow) - could be a nice deal: You show them the island and they took you back to Mahé...

Best wishes,
Lars.

Hallo Guy,

First of all I want to thank you all for the interest you showed for me diary. And also for feeling with me like the wound on my leg, and the troubles for my return to Mahe.It made me feel a bit less lonely, because nearly 3 weeks alone is rather long. Which does not mean that I should not be crazy about this island

This morning was a very nice one. At 6:45 28°C and 83%H.
Like I said earlier, only the news was not that nice. When I asked the IDC what I have to do now they answered that I could come to the IDC at Victoria harbour and they should pay my 100 Roupees back that I already paid. That is friendly I said but how can I come and pick them up as I am trapped on Silhouette. Their only answer was: “maybe you find a solution”.
So I tried to find one. I went to the hotel, or better what was the hotel, but the proposal they had was that this night there should come a boat with material, and I could return with this ship. But a week ago this boat “The Praslin Hero” arrived at 6 in the evening and left at 3 at night. Today the boat arrived at 6:30 p.m. and at this moment is still there. And it takes about 3 hours to return. Finally I found someone who wants to go Mahe for Easter so we can share the costs. The helicopter will pick me up at 8 tomorrow morning.
I am running out of beer again, but I made an “arrangement” with the shopkeeper, so I have enough beer tonight to celebrate my departure.
Late afternoon a sail yacht, a catamaran, arrived and anchored in front of the harbour. Two of the passengers came to my place and I told them every thing about the island, its history, and our tortoise project. They were surprised that nobody of the crew had told them anything from the island. This is a complain I hear every time, that these passengers are just put ashore without any explanation or information. Here some work still has to be done.
I already started cleaning the house as well as packing. I will do he rest tomorrow morning, because now we have to celebrate my departure, I hope to send tomorrow my last “Beitrage” out of Seychelles, in the meantime “Proost”
Gute Nacht,
Guy
PS. Today was a lovely day with a maximum temperature of 33°, and a whole day of sunshine.

Hallo Guy,

hello,
Indeed I had "eine gute und günstige Heimreise" Danke.
I am back in Belgium. Strang feeling.
When I am on Silhouette it feels so normal to be there, when I am Europe I feel strang.
Back to normal life, but after 17 times on Slihouette, I wonder, what is normal life? I have that strang feeling that life on Silhouette is more normal then our European way of living.
@Gaby
Sorry but this CD is sold out in Seychelles. I visited the 3 shops in Market Street and the one in front of the souvenir shops in Albert Street but the only answer was "napa". I think it is wise to accept Erik's proposal.
@ Dirk
What do you mean by Italienische Chefin? The Italian owner madame Lapolla? She is living on Mahe at Providence with her husband Mario, but stil got her house on Silhouette. They run an import and export business.
I hope from time to show a picture from the changements on Silhouette.
I left Jules a digital camera, a laptop and offered him an internet connection so he can send me the braking news from the island.
But I am already looking forward to return in June.

Guy
